Launching the Getting Ahead Project: Equipping Residents for Long-Term Success
At VFL Community Outreach CDC, resident services are about more than meeting immediate needs — they are about changing trajectories.
This January, alongside ongoing education, workforce, and wellness programming, VFL officially launched the Getting Ahead Project, a life-skills initiative designed to help residents build the tools needed for stability, growth, and long-term success.
What Is the Getting Ahead Project?
The Getting Ahead Project is a structured life-skills program created to address the everyday challenges residents face as they work toward independence and opportunity. The program focuses on practical skill-building and mindset development, helping participants strengthen both personal and professional decision-making.
Core areas of instruction include:
- Life Skills & Personal Responsibility
- Effective Communication
- Conflict Resolution
- Money Management & Financial Awareness
- Interpersonal Skills
- Mindset Change & Goal Setting
These sessions are designed to be practical, relatable, and empowering, giving residents tools they can apply immediately in their homes, workplaces, and relationships.
Why This Matters
Many barriers faced by families in affordable housing are not just financial they are systemic, relational, and behavioral. The Getting Ahead Project addresses those barriers head-on by helping residents:
- Improve communication within households
- Navigate conflict in healthy ways
- Develop financial discipline and planning skills
- Build confidence and accountability
- Shift from survival thinking to growth thinking
By focusing on mindset and skills together, VFL is helping residents move from short-term relief toward long-term stability and self-sufficiency.
A Natural Extension of VFL’s Mission
The launch of the Getting Ahead Project aligns seamlessly with VFL’s ongoing services, including GED preparation, job readiness, youth programming, and wellness initiatives. Together, these programs form a comprehensive support system that strengthens individuals, families, and entire communities.
This initiative represents VFL’s commitment to not just helping residents get through today but helping them get ahead tomorrow.
Looking Forward
As the Getting Ahead Project continues to expand, VFL remains focused on equipping residents with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to build sustainable futures.
